A bathroom is the smallest room in the house and the easiest one to build wrong. Everything hangs on the shower assembly staying watertight for twenty years behind tile nobody can inspect. In older St. Louis homes we usually find a mud-set pan on a settled floor, a cast iron drain that needs a new tie-in, and a fan venting straight into the attic.
Everything you are paying for is listed before demo: the shower assembly, the tile, the fixtures, and where the fan vents. Our plumber and electrician run on the schedule we set rather than their own. We waterproof the shower as a system, and you are welcome to look at the pan and walls before any tile goes on.
The usual choice is tile versus a solid-surface shower. Tile looks the way you want it and takes longer, and a solid-surface unit installs faster with fewer joints to fail.

Prep
We protect the hallway and floors, set containment, shut off the water, and demo to the studs and subfloor.
Work
Plumbing and electrical rough-in goes in, then the waterproofed shower assembly, backer board, wall tile, and floor.
Finish
Vanity, toilet, fixtures, fan, and trim go in, everything gets caulked, the room is cleaned, and the shower runs for ten minutes before we hand it back.

How long does a bathroom take?
A full hall bath gut is usually three to four weeks, and a primary bath with a custom shower runs four to six. Tile work and the cure times between steps set the pace. If it is your only bathroom, we sequence it to keep the toilet usable as long as possible.
Can you turn a tub into a shower?
Yes, and it is one of the better-value remodels we do. The drain has to move and the floor framing usually needs blocking for the new pan, so it is real plumbing work rather than a swap. Expect roughly $8,000 to $18,000 in this area depending on whether you go tile or a solid-surface unit.
How do you keep showers from leaking?
We build the shower as a waterproofing assembly instead of tile over green board: a sloped pan, a sheet or liquid-applied membrane, sealed corners and penetrations, and a flood test before tile. Tile and grout are finish, not waterproofing. We photograph the pan before it gets covered and you can look at it yourself.
Can you add a bathroom where there is not one?
Usually yes. What decides the cost is where the drain can go, since a new toilet needs a three-inch line with proper slope and a vent. Over a basement or crawl space that is straightforward, and on a slab it means cutting concrete. We scope the plumbing path before we quote the finishes.
Do you do small bathrooms?
Yes. Powder rooms and small hall baths are regular work for us and often the fastest improvement in an older house. The cost per square foot is higher than a big bath because the fixture count is the same in less room.
